Juliet- day 9

 January 14, 2022

Today was the last day of our Asian Heritage, J-term, and it was definitely a good one.

Noor started our day with a presentation she made about Pakistan and its culture. She spent her winter break in Pakistan and decided to share with us her heritage. Her presentation covered daily life in Pakistan, the clothes, the food and her experience in Pakistan as a third culture child. Following Noor’s presentation we watched a short film about the Pakistani community in Houston. The video followed a woman as she went around Houston to see the Pakistani cultural influences and community in Houston. We saw things like the cricket games they hold, the district, where most of them live and how such a large Pakistani community came to be in Houston.

After we watched the movie we had a zoom meeting with Dr.Chao, the director of the Houston Asian Americans Archive. To prepare for this meeting she had us interview an Asian American or an immigrant and come back to share with the class. She did this to give us an image of what she does for work and how she does it. A couple students shared back with the class, namely Wyatt, who had interviewed Ms.Agarwal  about her experience as an immigrant and what she’s gone through. After we shared to the class, Dr.Chao shared a presentation with us about Asian Immigrant history in the United States and the discrimination they’ve endured. The presentation was very interesting and almost enlightening due to the fact that we never hear about Asian history in America.

After Dr.Chao left us it was time for lunch. Mr.Zhou had a nice Chinese Sichuan lunch prepared for us. Sichuan food originated in the Sichuan province of West China, it is known for its bold flavors with garlic, peppercorns and namely the sichuan peppers. We were served many different dishes and plates that were passed along the table, foods like dumplings and soups to duck with peppers. All the dishes were extremely good and the whole table was so happy with what we were eating. The restaurant told us about the peppercorns that Sichuan food is known for and challenged us to try them, most of us tried them and all I can tell you is the feeling is extremely unpleasant and almost numbing.

After everyone was full and almost exploding with Chinese food we headed back to the bus and went on our way to school. Since today was the last day of J-term we had to work on our presentations. We split up the work by countries,Vietnam, India, Pakistan, and China, and we all went to work.

That pretty much sums up our last Friday of J-term, and it was definitely a good one.
