Day 9 (Everest)

January 14, 2022

As the final day of the Asia and Asian culture J-Term rolled around, everyone was excited to see what it had in store. We started our day off with a couple of presentations, the first of which came from one of our classmates, Noor. Noor was in Pakistan for the winter break and decided to make a presentation about Pakistan to share with the rest of the group. She went over things like daily life and what it is like as someone coming from the US, a first world country, all of which were interesting topics. After Noor's presentation we also watched a short video about the Pakistani community in Houston and it really gives you a sense that Houston is so much more that what it looks like.

The next presentation we had was from a special guest, her name is Dr. Chao and she is the director of the Houston Asian Americans Archive. The visit started out with the class sharing the interviews they had done for prep work for the visit and then shifted to Dr. Chao presenting the history of discrimination and triumphs in each group of AAPI people in the US. Overall, the presentation was extremely informative and had a lot of history summed up into bite-sized pieces.

Once Dr. Chao had finished her presentation, we watched a video that went through different AAPI groups and showcased a restaurant and owner, where the owner would talk about their restaurant and how it fits into their life and how it fits into Houston.

At Cooking Girl for Lunch
At last, it was time for lunch, and everyone was buzzing with excitement. We were going to have Chinese food again, but this time, it was going to be Sichuan food, a style of Chinese food that incorporates a lot of spices and a specific peppercorn that makes your mouth go numb. Everyone enjoyed the food and at the end, the restaurant gave us some of the peppercorns for us to try if we wanted to, which everyone did. The sensation is quite an unpleasant one, but it is also somewhat addicting.

Once everyone had eaten their fill, we headed back to school and started the final task for the day. Because the J-Term was coming to an end, we needed to create a presentation of our own, that goes over all of the things that we did over the course of the 9 days. With our work set for us in place, the J-Term came to a close
